SUPREME COURT OF NIGERIA

NIGERIAN SUPREME COURT, has upheld the judgement of a Court of Appeal, which endorsed the deregistration of one of the political parties in the country – National Unity Party, NUP, and 73 other parties, by Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC.

INEC, in 2020, deregistered 74 political parties due to non-compliance with the country’s Electoral Act and Constitutional provisions.

The judgement read by Justice Adamu Jauro, on Friday, stated that the deregistration of National Unity Party, NUP, was done in line with the laws and compliance with the extant provisions of the Constitution and Electoral Act.

The Supreme Court’s judgement, automatically, sealed the hope of other parties, among the deregistered 74 political parties, which have cases pending in courts contesting their deregistration by INEC.
