SAM OHUABUNWA, former President/CEO, Neimeth International Pharmaceuticals Plc, immediate past President of Nigerian Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria, and Chairman of Nigerian Economic Summit Group; on Monday, said he is on the ring, to contest as President of Nigeria in the 2023 general election, on the platform of the major opposition Peoples Democratic Party, PDP.

Ohuabunwa told journalists, at a media briefing, in Abuja, that the worsening socio-economic and political conditions in the country, needed to be fixed, and he was a candidate for the job. He criticized political elites for paying attention to accumulating wealth, at the expense of the people they sought to govern.

He is concerned about continues actions that threatened the unity of Nigeria, and his presidency will bring cases of discrimination in appointments to an end. The greatest challenge that propelled his presidential ambition was the need to produce “a new Nigeria” where injustice is ruled out.

A new Nigeria, he said, has become urgent as “many Nigerians had lost hope in the country because of the depressing economic challenges, where 53% of the Nigerian Youths are unemployed [more than half of Nigeria’s employable youths] and nearly another 22% remain underemployed”. Nigeria, he said has become “poverty capital of the world with nearly 70% of Nigerians classified as poor, by the World Bank”.

Nigerian South East region, where he belongs, Ohuabunwa said, has been marginalized, and 2023, provides the best opportunity for the zone to produce the next president of the country.  His desire is to ensure that Nigeria becomes a nation of knowledge, industry, integrity, liberty, justice, patriotism and fear of God.

“We will also ensure that Nigeria becomes Nation where the federating units will be liberated from the shackles of oppression and suffocation from the Centre, so they can compete, soar and prosper and provide maximum democracy dividends to their citizens”, Ohuabunwa further stated.

OHUABUNWA, the Convener of New Nigeria Group, NNG, said membership of the group cuts across other parties.  And he decided to run on the platform of the PDP because of the party’s internal democratic ethos.

His words: “This new direction indicating an enviable reformation was exhibited at its National Convention for the election of Party officials at the end of October 2021, during which it peacefully elected a new and competent crop of national leaders.

“The PDP in our view has shown that it has learnt some useful lessons during the past 6 years of being in the opposition at the federal level, and seems prepared to correct all mistakes it may have made when it was in power, and to refocus

“Governance at all levels to the true enhancement of the security, well being and happiness of the citizens of Nigeria. We believe that in doing this, the new thinking, the new vision, the new values and the freshness we bring will be in sync with the new mission of the PDP.

“No doubt, we are fully persuaded that the birth of a new Nigeria, which we espouse will find fulfillment through the platform of the PDP.”

His declaration to run for the Presidency, Ohuabunwa said, debunked  erroneous assertion that no politician from the South East geopolitical zone had shown serious interest in running for the office of President in 2023.
